So if you have a doctor behind your name though, maybe they will listen to you. So that's the case with Dr. Brewer. Probably he learned a lot of his information from traditional midwives, but he is the most, like, well researched. And even, you know, most westernized people would consider Brewer to be like, out there and a crazy person who thinks that you can prevent illnesses naturally. But he did a lot of research back in the 80s based on giving women certain types of diets and seeing if they were able to prevent preeclampsia, things like iugr, which is a small for gestational age baby, and, you know, what about twin pregnancy and a number of different complications. And he found that eating whole foods was the ticket. Having enough calories, having enough whole foods that include protein and salt. So if you look at pretty much any animal, like if you're into farming and you raise animals, the first thing most people do, even if they're grass fed animals, will put out a salt block or a mineral block. And so that was one of the founding pieces for Dr. Brewer was making sure that women are getting plenty of high quality sea salt along with enough calories. Because, you know, the western model says, you know, eat your normal diet and add a prenatal and 200 calories. Well, that's just not enough for some women. And it depends, you know, what if you have a stressful job, what if you're caring for kids other than the one you have right now, you know, say you have three or four other children, or you're moving during pregnancy, or you have a male baby that is going to increase your nutrient requirements. So we also accounted for things like that to include more calories in the diet to hopefully prevent some of these illnesses. With preeclampsia specifically, his theory was that there are these lakes that fill with blood behind the placenta. And when the lakes are full, everything's flowing perfectly. Baby's getting plenty of nutrients, but when there's not enough blood volume, those lakes start to dry up and the heart pumps harder to get more blood to those lakes to feed the baby. And so that is where you see that rise in blood pressure when there's not enough blood pumping to those placental lakes.58:T628,Yes, for sure. Most women, you know, there are like, there are different types, and I think there's still research to be done on the different types. Some symptoms happen rapidly and come on very quickly. And to me, that would be someone who looks different, you know, like night and day, different between a day or two. Like you saw them yesterday and you see them today and just something seems off, like they look really puffy or they don't look like themselves. They're not feeling well. That would be concerning. Usually there's more of, like, a steady rise, like the body is, like, starting to compensate. And a lot of times we can catch it in that compensation mode and try to do some things to prevent it ex, you know, picking up and getting worse. So typically, women would have that rise in blood pressure happening over weeks or months. It might start out where it's just 130 over 80 at one visit, and then it's back down, but it goes up the next day, and it can kind of teeter on those borderline numbers for a little bit before it gets severe. In that case, you can do all the things to try to stay healthy and well and wait for labor. Most of the time they are going to recommend induction. The standard of care is to Recommend Induction by 37 weeks for people who have uncontrolled hypertension and or preeclampsia. So that's what's most likely going to be recommended to people. But I would say women that are symptomatic, they're gonna know, like, they're gonna really not feel well, have headaches, have blurry vision, and just appear not their usual selves.59:T410,Yeah, I feel like the other big one is sleep prioritizing rest, because your blood pressure drops while you're sleeping. And a lot of times sleep can be interrupted in pregnancy. Some people struggle with, like, their airway being more obstructed. So, you know, you can do things like the dilators for opening your nasal airways. You can help with sleep overall with magnesium or other herbal supplements. But sleep is really key. And I've had wonderful women that I've gotten to work with that have just showed me all the ways to prevent experiencing preeclampsia. I can remember when she was very religious about how much she slept, and she prioritized taking a nap every day with her toddlers and going to bed early so that she could get adequate rest and then balancing that with daily activities like walking, Pilates, things like that that are going to get the blood flowing and moving. Because you don't want stagnation either. You kind of want adequate rest, adequate Nutrition and then also some activity to. To keep things moving.5a:T56b,1. So my name's Sam. I'm a traditional midwife here in Kentucky and I struggled with hypertension during my first pregnancy. So that really led me to go down that rabbit hole and become a midwife. And I had a beautiful home birth with my second baby and I did not experience the same challenges that I did the first time. So it really solidified my trust in natural healing and midwifery. And so, yeah, that's how I got my start into learning all about the blood pressure stuff and birth at home.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"I love it. And generally speaking, if your blood pressure is consistently 140 over 90 or above, that would risk you out of home birth midwifery care. If you're with hospital provider, that would be the definition for hypertension as well. And you know they would continue your care in that setting.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Okay, and what about preeclampsia? Often they say that if you have hypertension, it can put you at risk for developing preeclampsia. But they are not the same thing. Some people present only with hypertension and other people present with hypertension and they also develop preeclampsia. So just one high blood pressure reading should not give you the label of hypertension or preeclampsia. It needs to be multiple readings spaced out. And for preeclampsia, that's defined by also having either some physical symptoms or other clinical indications other than just blood pressure.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Okay, okay. I feel like we're seeing a lot more cases of hypertension and preeclampsia. You know, when I ask older midwives, they maybe had one or two cases their entire career, and now, you know, you hear it a lot more from friends and family and other people in your community who have developed preeclampsia or hypertension. We're seeing quite a rise in the numbers.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Interesting. Do we know why? You know, sometimes there are cases where it just cannot be prevented. But mostly the elder midwives, they knew how to prevent complications of pregnancy through diet and lifestyle. And so I think their statistics were just better overall from this handed down wisdom of knowing how to prevent preeclampsia.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah, yeah. So let's chat about prevention. I think that's probably what everyone is wanting to know. How do we stop this from happening to us? How do we prevent getting hypertension or preeclampsia in pregnancy?","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah, and the more we look into it, it really starts before you even come become pregnant. Looking at your diet and your health history and, you know, a number of factors, but the more research that comes out, it shows that some of your vitamin levels pre pregnancy can predispose you to having preeclampsia. I think one of them is B12, vitamin D. There are several others. So for a lot of people, I think Brewer's diet is a great framework for just getting a whole foods diet in general. If you're planning on having a baby, that can really set you up for success and hopefully not deal with some of those complications.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah. Is there a location that kind of houses this information?","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yes, there is a very old school website I love. I don't think it's changed since Dr. Brewer helped set it up or I don't know who took over after, but it's very old school and very simple. And that's what I like about Brewer's diet too, is that it is very simple foods. Like, it's almost boring because it's just basic whole foods and kind of like checking them off the list and making sure you get each one of them. And those Categories that he has include like eating at least two eggs a day, plenty of protein. You can choose from like six to eight different types of protein and then veggies and some whole grains as well.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Nice, nice, Sounds good. And I know you mentioned salt. Yeah, let's chat about that. Because I feel like most women, if they're, especially if they're in the kind of conventional hospital setting, they would probably be told to reduce salt intake if their blood pressure is high.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yes. And what do they see most often? What do they see most often when they recommend that it gets worse and worse and then you someone who's needing to be induced super early or they have severe complications and you just don't see that as much in the home birth midwifery model because we're encouraging women to get plenty of salt. The minerals are super important for making sure that the body is being fueled adequately. So restricting the salt is really restricting your overall mineral content.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah, totally agree. And I think, you know, for people watching, in case it isn't clear, you know, I think in a conventional hospital setting, what they also fail to do is distinguish between types of salt. You know, are you getting salt from McDonald's french fries and using a processed table salt or are you using a mineral rich, high quality sea salt? And of course, we are advocating for the good sea salt, not the process.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yes, you know, and that was a key thing. Processed foods are really not great for pregnancy. They can affect more than just your blood pressure, your blood sugar, your overall health status. The problem with western foods is they are high calorie, low nutrient value. And you see that with things like ionized salt, iodine salt. It has some calories, but it lacks the nutritional value. So what you end up with is super healthy people who avoid all of the junk food. Sometimes they can end up restricting calories, not meaning to, just because they're trying to avoid all this western food. And then you have the other side of the spectrum with people who tend to be slightly overweight, who are indulging in high calorie foods that actually have low nutritional value. So you can have someone that looks like they have an expanded blood volume, but if you actually look at their blood work, it shows that they appear somewhat malnourished even though they're eating adequately.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah. So interesting. So just to confirm, or maybe this is not it, do you follow this diet when you already have hypertension or just to prevent. Or is there something different you should be doing if you are actually diagnosed with hypertension during pregnancy, to reverse it? If it can be reversed.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"So if people don't have hypertension, I usually recommend following the Weston A. Price dietary recommendations for pregnancy because they're just, they're very similar, but they're not as geared towards complications. And if someone has a history of hypertension or preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy, then I would recommend doing the brewer's diet. And there is an emergency protocol for brewer's diet which is pretty hefty. It's like 17 eggs a day and a quart of milk and an entire rotisserie chicken. But that is meant to kind of like try to play catch up really quickly and try to get more nutrients into the body and get your body to make more blood so that it's no longer restricted in like a shorter amount of time.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Okay, awesome. And then if you are diagnosed with hypertension, can you have a home birth or does it always warrant having to be transferred to a hospital setting?","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Well, this is the tricky thing because so much of even midwifery practice has been co opted by the medical system. You know, with the formation of the ama, the American Medical association, that led the way for all of, of the different professions to be licensed. And so a lot of what women are dealing with is licensure and the regulations around blood pressure. So if you hire a licensed midwife and she has to follow the rule of 140 over 90, then you may not be able to have a home birth. And so that was a big concern when I was looking at having my next baby. I didn't want to be risked out of care for that. So sometimes it can be really tricky to find a provider that's willing to kind of like stick their neck out for you and be willing to like, work on nutrition and include all the natural supplements and things that can help. And you know, there are significant risks that we don't want to downplay. But often these things can be avoided with adequate care. But sometimes it can be hard to find.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah, thank you. And so you kind of did mention risk. Are there any symptoms that mamas should be looking out for that you would say do warrant, like immediate medical attention if this is something that they're dealing with. And what should they be looking out for?","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"$58","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Okay, yeah, thank you. And so we chatted about the diet, and I'm guessing in that case it would maybe go for the emergency dietary protocol. Is there any other, like, lifestyle tips or anything that people can do to assist with hypertension during pregnancy other than the diet?","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"$59","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Awesome. Thank you so much. And I did want to briefly chat about post birth. I've heard that you can also get preeclampsia after you've given birth. Is this true? And if so, what should we be looking for? Postpartum. That may kind of raise the alarm. Like. Like, okay, yeah,","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"so if. If you've had blood pressure issues, you probably should continue to monitor your blood pressure postpartum. That's going to. Going to be one of those key indicators to look for. And then the same symptoms that you would experience prenatally, like the swelling or the headaches that don't go away, blurry vision. But I do think that the postpartum preeclampsia, sometimes it occurs because we've kind of, you know, the Western model used, say, just like, get the baby out and that will cure the preeclampsia. And most of the time that does work, but occasionally it doesn't. And I think that's where it comes back to Brewer's philosophy. You know, the body has been compensating, so sometimes taking that baby out does help the body have to compensate less, but sometimes it's. It's like it's already set up to be compensating. And maybe even after the baby, your body just, like, still hasn't caught up with all the nutritional needs of the pregnancy and the baby.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah. Wow. Makes so much sense. Thank you for sharing all your wisdom. Is there anything else you want to cover in regards to hypertension or preeclampsia or. If we got it all.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Oh, the other key point is sometimes people will try to replace some of their calories or their nutritional needs with supplements and. Excuse me, some supplements are so good and others are not as good. It's really important to not supplement your protein with protein powders and also with greens and other things like that. You really want to get your nutrition from whole foods and brewers specifically. He found that using supplements rather than whole foods to try to compensate created worse outcomes. So that the philosophy is that you really tried to get all of your nutrients from your food because it has the balance of, you know, the fiber, the probiotics, the minerals, they're all balanced and whole in there. Whereas if you just take the pure protein or whatever you're needing to add in and eat the same, the outcomes were not as good.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah, I mean, that makes so much sense to me. I think people forget that even healthy processed food is still processed food. Right. I totally agree with you. Whole foods are always the way. Thank you, Sam.","marks":[],"data":{}}]},{"nodeType":"paragraph","data":{},"content":[{"nodeType":"text","value":"Yeah.
