Description: ‘As a devastating Ebola outbreak grows faster than any before it, world leaders are scheduled to adopt a Political Declaration on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response at the UNGA High-Level Meeting on 25 September. In the midst of this crisis, there is an opportunity for leaders to commit to concrete, measurable actions to close the gaps exposed time and again by health emergencies and that continue to put the world at grave risk.
‘This year has already tested global pandemic readiness - the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Andes hantavirus outbreak requiring a coordinated international response. The lesson is consistent: the world must move earlier, and faster to prevent outbreaks and stop them before they escalate. And countries must move together - something that is harder today than at the outset of COVID-19, but nonetheless essential.
‘This high-level event brings together senior leaders, national and international policymakers, and top analysts to confront a single question: what will they do to translate the political commitments into money and capability before the next outbreak comes to test us?’
