Monopine cell towers are designed to blend into the landscape and make wireless infrastructure less visually intrusive. But while they may look like trees from a distance, they can contain significant amounts of synthetic materials. As those materials weather and deteriorate, questions are being raised about plastic pollution, sparking grassroots advocacy efforts in regions such as the area around Lake Tahoe. Meanwhile, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering changes that could further limit environmental review of wireless infrastructure.
